Ice Dogs Get It Done in Miramichi

2018-01-19 - Coastal Graphics Ice Dogs

The Ice Dogs go undefeated in the Miramichi Salmon Tournament and bring home the Division 1 banner.

G3: After a solid 2-0 start on Day 1 the Ice Dogs follow up on Day 2 with another strong effort against the Riverview Blues in their final preliminary match-up. With the standings extremely tight both teams were hungry for the 2 points to keep them in the running for top spot in the Peewee standings.

Quigg opened the scoring on a nice little passing play from Reynolds and McGuire. Bennet made it 2-0 on a nice feed from Phillips and a smart play by Toole. A nice little bit of gritty work by Hay helped Sturgeon score under 2 minutes later on a bullet of a shot over the shoulder of the Blues tender (right where grandma keeps the cookies) to make it 3-0 after one period of play. Riverview scored late in the second to make it 3-1 but Quigg restored the 3 goal lead less than a minute later with a blast on a beautiful pass by McGuire and some gritty work by Reynolds behind the net. Just 28 seconds into the 3rd McGuire put the Dogs up 4-1 with a series of dangles through the Blues D and a sweet move on the tender. Riverview answered three minutes later only to have Hannay bury the biscuit making it 5-2 on a nice passing play setup by Bennett and Hay. Reynolds put the game away with a tidy wrap around late in the 3rd for a final score of 7-2. Quigg earned the POG nod for his solid play at both ends of the ice. A big shout out to the Ice Dogs defenders for moving the puck out of the defensive zone very well all game and keeping Riverview from establishing any sustained pressure. The Dogs offense had another dominant performance outshooting the Blues 29-12. With the win the Ice Dogs secured 1st overall in the Peewee division and placed as the top seed in the Division 1 semi finals.

G4: The Ice Dogs were matched up against the KC Bears in semi final action to start Day 3. The Ice Dogs came out knowing it was a "win and you're in" game and they brought the game to the Bears early and often.

Despite a dominating effort by the Dogs in the first period neither team found the back of the net. The Bears opened the scoring in the second but the Ice Dogs responded on a great shot by McGuire on a beautiful pass from Quigg which was started by Reynolds' hard work on the boards.  Hannay found the twine and made it 2-1 on a great play by MacPherson. The Bears would not roll over and tied the game 2-2 up early in the 3rd. Quigg restored the lead mid way through the 3rd with a blast on another play set up by Reynolds and McGuire. MacPherson gave the Dogs a 2 goal lead on a bomb from the point on a set up by Reynolds. The Bears made it interesting pulling their goalie and scoring with just 39 seconds left but Jacob Hannay capped the game off on a great pressure play to force the Bear defender to cough up the puck and seal the deal with an empty netter. MacPherson was awarded the POG for his great defensive and offensive play. The Dogs defense had a another great effort in the D-Zone while the offense had a strong performance outshooting the Bears 33-8 with the final score 5-3. The win sent the Dogs to the Finals to face the winner of the Riverview Blues and DQ Blizzards semi final.

G5: With a big win over the DQ Blizzards the Riverview Blues were hungry for a little pay back and a chance to send the undefeated Ice Dogs home with the silver. The Ice Dogs had other plans for the tournament finals. The fans in the sold out Civic Centre were treated to furious action with a lot of back and forth hockey.

The Ice Dogs' defenders and the rock solid tending of Graham kept the Blues at bay and off of the board in the first frame. With a minute left in the first Quigg made a beautiful stretch pass to McGuire who made a quick pass to Reynolds who made no mistake burying a perfectly placed shot low blocker side on the Riverview net minder to put the Dogs up 1-0. The Ice Dogs would go up 2-0 on a great play by Banks to keep the puck in the Blues' zone, a perfect pass from Phillips and a great finish by Brewer. Strugeon's extra effort and Hay's great shot would put the Dogs up a commanding 3-0 going into the 3rd frame. The Ice Dogs would get into penalty trouble in the third giving the Blues no less than 6 opportunities to get back into the game including a 5v3 opportunity upon which the Blues cashed in. Despite the 6 penalties the Ice Dogs defenders/penalty killers and Graham did a great job on the PK only surrendering the single 5v3 short handed goal. Hannay put the Dogs up 4-1 late in the third with Sturgeon and Hay getting the helpers. The Blues didn't back down and scored in the dying seconds of the game to make it 4-2 but the effort was not enough to stop the Dogs from taking the game and the gold. Graham was awarded the POG for his strong performance minding the net.

With the win the Ice Dogs went a perfect 5-0 and undefeated in the tournament taking the banner home. Great job boys!
