Caps lose to Sussex in final at Pioneer tournament

Sunday got off to an early start with an 8 am clash against the host Oromocto Eagles. This match was a battle from the opening drawn. Tha game remaind all square through the first two periods. Both teams keeping close tabs on the other.

As the third period moved on it appeared this one would be headed for overtime. With four minutes left Andrew Bennett gave the Caps a 1-0 lead and then gave them insurance at the two minute mark.

With the goalie for Oromocto out they got one back with 43 seconds remaining but it would be enough as Dennis Tichonov found the empty net to secure a 3-1 victory and a match with the Sussex Rangers in the final.

The Caps played a well disciplined team in the Rangers. The Rangers struck first on a tap in and got a 2-0 before the end of the second.

Looking to regroup in the third the Caps tried to press but the Rangers were not biting and held their ground. Brett Melanson  gave the Caps a chance wiring a low shot through the Sussex keeper with just under four minutes to play. Unfortunately it would not be enough as the Rangers played excellent defensive coverage. Make the final 2-1 Rangers. Hats off to the Rangers for a great tournament.

The Caps will look to build on a successful weekend with games against the Lions this coming Friday and Sunday.
