Saturday Recap: Lions Freeze out Blizzards Sunday Recap: Greasy roads lead to the Grant Harvey………

Lions Freeze out the Blizzards

It may have been 45 degrees below zero in the York Arena on Saturday night, but Ben Brewer was on fire in the Lions' net! Brewer stood tall as the visiting Lions downed the DQ Blizzards by a score of 4-1.  The two teams exchanged power play goals in the first period. The Blizzards opened the scoring shortly into the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Then the Lions got fired up, led by Captain Peyton Sheppard going top corner on the powerplay to even things at 1-1.   Sam Malloy missed on a breakaway but managed to bang home his own rebound to put the Lions up 2-1.  Brewer stood tall in the Lions' net making some spectacular saves, preserving the one goal lead into the third.  On the powerplay Mason Hunter went D to D to his partner Jacob Earle across the offensive zone blue line, Earle then ripped a shot towards the net where Nate Small showed off his soft hands redirecting the puck with a beautiful deflection into the twine!   Colin MacKinnon added extra insurance late in the third period with a shot from inside the blue line that handcuffed the Blizzards goaltender and snuck in shortside!  The Lions battled through the frigid temperature to get another notch in the win column final score Lions 4 Blizzards 1.

Greasy roads lead to the Grant Harvey………

The roads where greasy Sunday morning as the Lions hosted the out of town Coyotes in a 11:45 game, that resembled the road conditions.   The short staffed Coyotes opened the scoring midway through the first period.  Lion’s goaltender Andrew Couturier stopped the first shot but wasn’t able to corral the rebound.  Couturier took a stick to the head on the play, but was able to reset and remain in the game.  The Lions got fired up and scored on the next shift as big winger Aiden Liddle pounded home a rebound to knot things up at 1-1.   The teams battled hard back and forth until Peyton Sheppard put one home from the side of the net to put the Lions up 2-1.  Later in the first period defenseman Will Reynolds picked off a pass in the neutral zone and flew into the Coyotes zone, dekeing a Coyote or two and roofing a beautiful backhand to put the Lions up 3-1.  Coyotes made a goalie change to fire up their team and were able to get one back in the second period.   The referee put his whistle away in the third and the teams battled for every inch of ice, a few melees in front of the Lions' net but Couturier and the Lions D were able to fend of the bite of the Coyotes and preserve a 3-2 victory!
