Capitals lock up 2nd in their division with solid win over Sussex.
With a date in the semis on the line the Capitals took on the Sussex Rangers in their final game of round robin play. Lots of anticipation from both benches as this contest got underway. Brenden MacIssac gave the Caps a 1-0 lead picking up his own rebound off some nice work by Jakob Ashfield. Just a few minutes later Riley Varlan made it 2-0 from Braden Galbraith with lots of traffic in front.
The Caps continued to generate chances as the Rangers were bringing the physical play. Good puck movement gave the Caps a power play but nothing doing. The pace began to slow as the first frame wound down.
As the second got under way the slower place saw the Caps needing to clean up their passing game. Sussex missed on a great chance as the puck slid through Parsons and out the other side keeping the score at 2-0.
Jackson Reader added to the lead with solid pressure as the Caps were coming a strong penalty kill. Before the end of period, off a set draw play, Andrew Bennett wired a slap pass to Riley Varlan for a sweet tap to give Varlan his second of the night.
With the third period underway Sussex pressed with two quick goals on back to back shifts showing they had lots of fight left. 4-2. Luke Urquhart restored the three goal lead on the power play while stationed in front. Sussex was not done, with some great hustle on an odd man rush and great finish the gap was closed to 5-3 making it your final. Riley Varlen player of the game.
This result set up an Oromocto vs Caps semi in the morning at Soliders arena. The Caps will look to get some good rest to be ready for battle with the host Eagles.
