In the late 1970s, several community-minded citizens with experience in youth sports in the greater Fredericton area, and with Service Club support, initiated the "Needy Kids Program".  This program expanded to ensure that children in less fortunate families are not denied access to playing organized hockey with their friends.

As such, the Needy Kids Program became an integral part of the FYHA and continued to receive support from individuals, corporations, and charitable organizations.

In early 1999, the FYHA renamed the program the "Brendon Oreto Needy Kids Program" in honor and memory of Brendon Oreto, a former Fredericton AAA player who excelled at hockey before his accidental death in December 1998, at the age of 19.  In 2007, the program was renamed "The Brendon Oreto Foundation".

The Brendon Oreto Foundation has partnered with the following organizations: KidSport, Fredericton Sports Investment, Canadian Tire Jump Start program, and the FYHA.
