Power Skating Training and Technique

2014-04-22

Introducing Power Skating Training and Technique Program for Ages 11 and up...

Registration Package Click Here.

Traditionally power skating programs are conditioning programs, and while conditioning is an important aspect of hockey training, it by itself, does not turn out a great skater.

This power skating program is a technique training program with the purpose of teaching players “how to get where they want to go ….. fast”.  The players, who attend this program over the long term, will learn the proper technique to executing every hockey maneuver from a simple forward stride, to turns and transitions for multidirectional moves.  They will become not just fast, but powerful, stable, explosive, and efficiently fast.

Two teaching methods will be incorporated in the delivery of this program.

1) The use of all 5 senses to accommodate every kind of learner.  Kids learn differently from hearing instructions, to seeing a demonstration, to doing it themselves.  Players need to:

F-eel what they are doing
A-ct out what they are doing
S-ee in their minds eye how the move is done
T-hink about and analyze the move
This is the FAST method!
The 5th sense hearing is also helpful in determining if a maneuver is being done correctly.

2) Because skating is not natural to the human body, a 5-step process will be used in teaching each maneuver.
  • Learn to execute the maneuver correctly
  • Then correctly and powerfully
  • Then correctly, powerfully and quickly
  • Then correctly, powerfully and quickly with the puck
  • Finally correctly, powerfully, quickly with the puck and under pressure in game situations
The goal of this program is to create muscle memory by slowing down the skating maneuver, learning each component separately thus allowing the brain time to assimilate the information better.   Once the brain figures things out it transfers signals to the muscles, which can then perform the maneuver correctly (brain power combined with muscle power).   New elements are added as previous ones become part of the muscle memory….a true building block approach.

The summer program will be available to ages 11 and above and will have a low player to instructor ratio of 10 to 1.  The program will run once a week for 45 minutes each session and continue for 10 weeks.  There will be 2 Programs running this summer providing 20 spots for registration.
